EU Embassy Open House Day 2016 _Washington

S pomočjo, izjemno promocijo Slovenskega veleposlaništva v Washingtonu, smo bili letos deležni izjemnega sprejema, odprtih vrat na najrazličnejših lokacijah in institucijah (o tem kasneje) in ovacij strokovnjakov najrazličnejših področij.

The Cooking Kids from Slovenia at the EU Open House Day in Washington!

On the May 14th, the Delegation of the EU to the US, together with embassies of EU member countries, have organized the 10th traditional EU Open House Day, an event specialized in promoting each country's specific appeal to visitors from the US. The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington has been a regular participant, and this time their participation was enhanced by marking of the 25th anniversary of Slovenian independence. The essence of Slovenia presented through words, pictures, songs and music, as well as through tastes of authentic delicacies, has made a lasting impression with over 4000 visitors of the Embassy. Each year, the Embassy puts an emphasis on one particular region, and this year it was the Savinjska valley including one part of Podravje region.

The mission of the Cooking Kids project, entwined goals and activities with the children and their impressive skills, which include far more than just cooking, has attracted the US public attention already in 2015. With the aid and promotional activities of Slovenian Embassy in Washington, we have again received a fantastic reception through many wide open doors in different places and institutions, as well as accolades from experts in various fields.

Jurij Jurjevec, Maša Černivšek, Maja Ermenc and Blaž Ermenc, with their teacher - mentor Marija Ermenc from Ljubno ob Savinji Primary School, one of the best groups from each year competitions, have created a tasty representation of some traditional regional dishes such as ajdnek , apple beans, cottage cheese with traditional flavor, bread chips, made from buckwheat bread with walnuts, corn bread with pumpkin seeds, still warm buckwheat bread which disappeared in seconds!

A very interesting all day activity was making bread “birdies”, made of dough typical for festive (holydays) days in Slovenia, like Christmas and Eastern. Many experts admire the skills of children like culinary professionals and nutritionists. The kids from Ljubno ob Savinji have represented their region and Slovenia with great success and dignity.

A long queue has formed in front of the Embassy since the first stop was at the table of our young chefs – and many visitors had a hard time leaving that spot. Interesting questions were raised, which not only showed their pre-existing knowledge of Slovenia, but also encouraged us to share more detailed information about cultural background of specific dishes, cooking techniques and even sharing elaborate recipes – I bet we can look forward to welcoming visitors from the US to Savinjska dolina soon!

EU Open House Day was the main reason for our trip to Washington DC and we concluded it with the traditional reception held by the Ambassador Mr. Božo Cerar. The event was enriched with traditional Slovene songs and customs, which was a very appropriate start for the Cooking Kids team into their unforgettable and inspiring adventure unfolding in the following days of their mission in the US.

Traditional Slovenian Honey breakfast on the Delegation of the EU to the US in Washington

“Without them we wouldn’t exists either! Their extinction has to be prevented immediately by all means“. This and much more in-depth information has been shared by renowned experts on the 20th of May at the EU delegation to the US facilities in Washington DC. Initiated by the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington, the panel appropriately named »To be(e) or not to be(e)« has taken place with a goal of making the 20th of May become World Bee Day, as proposed by the Slovene Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry and Food.

To add appropriate “aroma” to this event, the students from Ljubno ob Savinji have prepared a traditional breakfast with honey, traditional dishes for their region.

The table was full of interesting and tasty food, such as ajdnek, cottage cheese with honey spread, honey-butter spread, roasted apples with honey and walnuts, buchwheat bread with walnuts, corn bread chips, honey gingerbread biscuits, buckwheat and beans praline with honey. Some savory dishes were offered as well, such as cottage cheese spread with pumpkin seed oil, mohod, Savinjska region traditional salami and festive small breads.

A large number of beekeepers, nutritionists, culinary experts, diplomats and fans of honey have tasted different honey varieties and received interesting reading materials prepared by the Embassy as well as lots of other useful information.
